Band Competition

The New Miami High School Band went to compete in the Music in the Parks competition - the first time a New Miami concert band has competed before. Each group performs two pieces for two judges. The band is scored on a rubric, and is given an overall rating of 1-5 (1 being the highest, 5 is the lowest). The groups are also ranked within their division (divisions are determined by school size).

The New Miami Band got a rating of 2 (Excellent) and placed FIRST within our division. The event also presents overall awards regardless of division, and our small but mighty New Miami Band also took home the award for Best Overall High School Band. This is a truly remarkable accomplishment for a group of students who have never competed before!

The other half of the day was spent celebrating at King's Island. The kids had an amazing time and consistently represented our school with maturity and responsibility. Congratulations to all!

Superintendent's Message

October 20, 2014

Message from the Superintendent

Dear New Miami parents and community,

On Friday night we lost a treasured member of our New Miami family, sophomore Christian Benge.  The district is offering grief counseling and other safe outlets to help our students navigate this difficult time.

We also wish to support Christian’s family and friends by honoring their request for privacy. Therefore the district will not be responding to press inquiries. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Patricia T. Blake

New Miami in the news

New Miami in the press:

Cincinnati Christian School football coach David Fulcher said he never imagined his team still would be looking for its first win this deep in the season — not after returning so many players from last year’s historic finish.

New Miami coach John Singleton can relate, to some extent. His Vikings have been hit by a rash of injuries the past few weeks, and now they are trying to get back on track after losing two straight to break momentum from a 4-1 start.

Superintendent Job Posting

Superintendent Job Description

2014 Reading Challenge

New Miami Elementary School encouraged our students to improve their reading skills with our final challenge of 2014.

Students were to read 5 chapterbooks with 5 projects or 10 picture books and 10 projects.  All reading projects were due Friday, May 2, 2014 and displayed in the school media center.

Project ideas were very creative.  We had giant book markers, posters advertising the book, timelines and hanging mobiles to name a few.  Book projects brought with them great converstaions at home, school and with other students.

Students completing the challenge will be given a ticket to a special presentation by "Matt Jergens Comedy Juggler" on Friday afternoon May 16th.

Since these projects were a family affair, all caregivers are invited to the show if their child has completed the challenge.  Look for your ticket !

Please find a sampling of some projects by listening to 1st grader Gavin Hobbs and his booktalks.  "A Crazy Day with Cobras" and The Notebook of Doom "Attack of the Shadow Smashers."

Real Money Real World

On May 14 volunteers from the OSU Extension Office and CHACO brought the Real Money, Real World simulation to our 8th graders.  In the simulation students were given a job, salary, education level, and children to support.  They were then sent to different booths where they were to choose things like housing, insurance, food, etc.  The goal was to get through these life-like examples with money left over.  It was a real eye opener for many students as they had to get "second jobs" to support their financial choices and "family." The resounding comment made by the students after they completed the simulation was, "I didn't know kids were so expensive!" Hopefully this experience gave them something to really think about as they make choices that affect their upcoming high school experience and beyond.

Heading into a rivalry “Butler Bowl” game at New Miami (3-5, 2-1 Miami Valley Conference Gray Division) on Friday, the Cougars (0-5, 0-3) will be especially anxious to turn the corner, Singleton predicted.

2015-16 school hours

2015-16 hours to remain the same

Last Spring the New Miami administration tested a possible new school calendar. We held a trial run before the end of the school year, asked for feedback from parents, guardians and community members, and studied the economic impact of such a change.

The resulting data convinced the district to maintain hours from previous years, with the inclusion of Early Release Thursdays. Interim Superintendent Jon Graft noted, "The cost to make changes was estimated to be near $400,000, a sum that New Miami can't absorb."

New Hours Q&A

2015-2016 School Hours Q & A:

1.  Why are we making this change?

We gathered feedback from parents throughout the year about having the same start and ending time and they were very positive about a “one-stop, one-time” approach. Additionally it will allow our teachers to have a daily, district-wide meeting time to collaborate on achieving shared goals.

We encourage your feedback as we work to make the 2015-2016 school year the best yet!

Strategies for Helping Grieving Children

All children deal with grief and loss very differently.  They need special care in order to learn how to deal with grief and move forward to “bounce back” with their lives after experiencing a loss.  A parent’s first reaction is to protect their child from unpleasant experiences.  However, protecting your child from the realities of life does not necessarily teach them coping skills.
