Hello, My name is Tim Weigel and I started working as the Technology Director for the New Miami Local school district in 2001. I am the sole IT support personnel for the district and am involved with every aspect of information technology including funding, planning, bidding, implementation, training and support. My job duties include every facet of IT infrastructure including applying for and managing grants through the federal government and state of Ohio for primarily network transport and telephony costs.  I love my job, and love working with the kids and staff at New Miami.  Please see a list of my duties below.

Training and General Duties

 

 

Coordinates staff development activities to ensure that all students/teachers are comfortable using their computers through staff development, mini class lessons and modeling.

 

 

Facilitates and assists staff with effective integration of technology and school curriculum looking at both short and long term goals

 

 

Create awareness of new/innovative uses of technology, mostly through email.

 

 

Liaison with State (ETECH)/Federal (FCC & ERATE)/District Representatives and Tech Coordinators from other schools

 

 

Attendance of webinars, technology classes, seminars, workshops, conferences, etc.

 

 

Coordinates/facilitates planning for technology – Leads the Tech Committee for writing the technology plan.

 

 

Keeps abreast of the constant changes in technology

 

 

Recommends/Specifies hardware/software products

 

 

Initiates an inventory and labeling of hardware, peripherals and software used school wide and provides explicit documentation to the Treasurer’s office.

 

 

Technology Procurement

 

 

Develop and coordinate a time line for additional hardware purchases

 

 

Help develop a school wide AUP (Acceptable Use Policy).

 

 

Coordinate and Maintain DLT (Distance Learning Technology)

 

 

Maintain an adequate budget throughout the year.

 

 

Troubleshoot and maintain the lab and classroom computers.

 

 

Software/license management

 

 

Help prepare presentations and media for the NSBA, OSBA, ETECH Conference and other public presentations marketing the achievements of the school district

 

 

Help teachers and administrators create DVD’s for law enforcement, or for educational consumption throughout the district.

 

 

 

 

 

LAN (Local Area Network) Administrator

 

 

Coordinates voice/video/data network infrastructure

 

 

Coordinates/Documents LAN planning & installation

 

 

Coordinates Staff Development Activities re: LAN access & services

 

 

Installs & Maintains systems security

 

 

Develops LAN Access Policies & Procedures

 

 

Maintain, Troubleshoot and Repair Aruba Wireless Network consisting of 2 Controllers and 56 Distributed Access Points.

 

 

Consults and coordinates with SWOCA regarding standards

 

 

Coordinate vendors and purchases

 

 

Inventory and Record Keeping: Hardware/Software/IP addresses/Passwords/Accounts

 

 

Coordinate appropriate Networking related inservices (Email/Internet/General usage & Troubleshooting)

 

 

Software License Management

 

 

Maintain Library Databases and Functionality

 

 

Manage & Maintain the LAN (Local Area Network)

 

 

Manage and Maintain printing systems

 

 

Installs & maintains systems security

 

 

Support administrative software (e.g., Microsoft Office 2007 and Adobe Master Suite)

 

 

Trains users on how to use Schoolpoint website and am the point of contact for structural changes to website.

 

 

Trains users on how to use VOIP phone system

 

 

Database and Web Administrator

 

 

Maintains Security System, Configuration, Accounts, Procurement of Key Fobs, Remote client for Administrative viewing with configuration of administrative accounts.

 

 

Set up, configuration and make changes to accounts for DASL, Progress Book, Active Directory, EMAIL, Phones System, Website, Moodle, Copiers, Printers and various other educational programs as needed.

 

 

Maintain and configure MySQL database and web client for Media Retrieval System.

 

 

Maintain and Configure Follett Library Database and all of its components.  This includes hardware such as Dolphin Portable scanner and USB scanners for workstations. Backups of database are done by librarian.

 

 

Maintain, Configure and update web based helpdesk called Spiceworks.  Maintain all accounts and update requests from end users.

 

 

Maintain, Configure and help support the Nutrikids database for the cafeteria. Help troubleshoot POS system and interface with vendor for upgrades.

 

 

Performs backups of SAN (Storage Area Network) with Tape and Storage Drives.

 

 

Helps support the Treasurer’s Office doing data transfers between USAS and ING.  Also support Check and PO printers and the associated forms.

 

 

 

 

 

Break /Fix and Peripherals

 

 

Configure, Upgrade and Repair 9 Servers - 2DNS Controllers Server 2008, 1 SAN Server 2003, 1 Print Server2008, 1 Windows 2000 server for Library Database and Language Lab, 1 Ubuntu Linux Based Moodle Server running Apache, 1 SQL Server running Windows NT4, 1 Virtual VMware server controlling Security database, 1 Server Windows 2000 running Successmaker database.

 

 

Coordinates repairs of sound system, wireless microphones, ceiling mounted speakers and light boards.

 

 

Maintains the Media Retrieval System which consists of 24 VHS players, 6 DVD Players, Satellite Broadcast, Cable In the Classroom, multiple video and audio modulators, Server, Desktop, and television.  In addition there are TVs in all classrooms and some offices with network controller boxes.

 

 

Maintains the Security system which consists of DVR, 31 Security Cameras, Coaxial Cable bus, 2 Programming controllers, 1 security interface computer, 4 access points.  Interface with security monitoring company that monitors for burglary and fire.

 

 

Repair, configure and upgrade all desktop computers located in the district.

 

 

Repair, configure, upgrade or arrange for service of all LaserJet printers located in the district.

 

 

Repair, configure, upgrade, or arrange for service of all laptop computers located within the district.

 

 

Repair, configure or arrange for service of all Interactive White Boards located within the district. This includes Boards, Projectors, Smart Pads and associated software

 

 

Set up and configure all document cameras located within the district.

 

 

Repair, configure or arrange for service of all Digital Cameras and Flip Video Cameras located within the district which every teacher and administrator has.

 

 

 

 

 

Finances

 

 

 

 

 

 Understand the district budget, budgeting process, and spending process, and work within this system to secure adequate resources for instructional computing. Help to ensure that school-level budgets and the district budget adequately support the district's instructional technology plan. Be especially aware of equity issues when doing budgeting and distributing resources between schools. Work with administration and faculty to write grants for implementation of technology related educational programs.

 

 

Apply through Schools and Libraries annually for Voice/Data/Wireless funds that pay for 90% of the above mentioned expenses. This is a 4 stage process 470, 471, 486, Reimbursement.

 

 

Apply annually for the Ohio K-12 Network FY Application which is $6,000.00 a year.

 

 

Parent/School Liaison

 

 

Maintain and change parent logins for online grade book (Progress Book), and provides all initial student and parent logins once a year.

Consult with parents regarding tactics to keep their children safe from online child predators.

A newly acquired duty as of this year is the web site content overseer.  I will be heading up a committee composed of administrators and others in charge of their sections to update the website.  My job will be to insure that New Miami schools are posting relevant and engaging content on our website on a regular basis.  I have also taken over the design of the website, and you will be seeing a new format shortly.  Feel free to contact me with any suggestions for the committee to consider.
